Like Apple, there were devices that could “do” everything that an ipod could do, before there was an ipod. There were phones that had the same “features” as an iphone, minus the big touchscreen, long before there was an iphone. But the ipod and the iphone, were just
better
than everything that came before.

Side note: where I went to college had a EV1 in the lobby by the computer lab, kids used to nap in it. I popped the hood and a look around just for fun once.

I had a Creative Zen mp3 player, it still works! It was fine, scroll through files or songs. I lived in Japan at the time and you could rent CDs at Tsutaya (Japanese Blockbuster) and rip them from the PC to this. I was in the military and I didn’t want to bring huge binders of CDs with me, so I got this and it is an amazing device. Made from stamped aluminum, stayed cold, fantastic scroll and select wheel, I fuggin HATE the circle the Apple came out with. To me this was better and it had 32GB and later a 64GB Xtra version came out. I don’t know what year I got it, but I didn’t know anyone with an MP3 player at the time.

You want a minimalist interior? Weak sauce, this electric horseless carriage doesn’t even have an interior.

That’s a good example of something that
should
have been successful because it was pretty brilliant...
When the iphone came out I had a nokia phone with a MUCH better camera (than the iphone), a removable memory card, a REAL flash, and it had wifi and GPS and bluetooth... the camera was accessed (and protected) by its own little sliding flap on the back of the phone... it was brilliant! And by comparison, indestructible.

WRONG way to do it SECOND. Or a lot furthur down, since there have been plenty of cars without grilles.
The EV1 looks fine because it doesn’t have the styling where you’d expect to find the grille. The Tesla has all the style to go with the grille but looks like they chickened out at the last minute.
